We found a spot across the creek amongst the trees and setup camp by 2:30 or so. It was a slow setup as we were pretty bracketed from the drive in, passenger and driver alike.
What saved us was the hot spring right in the station's main grounds. Just deep enough to soak and a small swim, and soak we did, for about 2 hours, until we heard the happy hour bell at 5 pm
A quite night was had chilling at camp and just after breakfast the next day the boys were back and as I write this at 1130 they still there.
The station has a 1000 km of tracks to explore and see a huge variety of pools, fishing holes and amazing scenery. The challenge is that many of the closer ones are dry due to the time of year but also as the wet season hasn't been great for the last two years. The thought of dragging the kids and hour in the car to swim in a pool about the same size as the one they in wouldn't win any friends. So we going to chill here today.
Of the stations we have stayed at, this is certainly be the most commercially focused and it overwhelms the scenery in some ways. For example $10 for a load of washing, lighting your own fire to heat water for showers and ice for $10 a block! All of this for $20 / adult per night. This didn't quite sit right with us and so we going to make a move tomorrow towards bitter springs near Mataranka.
Would I be back : maybe at a different time of year and maybe as a final destination as apposed to a pass through point. That way you can dedicate enough time and mindset for the place.
Note from later in the day. We retired from the pool for lunch and some Ross school. Then straight back for more swimming. It did sour a bit when the boys were pretending to be dogs and playing fetch with rocks. Boys and rocks what could go wrong. Well it turns out quite a bit, with Andy pickin up a head wound. Much blood and panic by all involved but we settled down by the pool to recover with an ice pack and he was back in the pool (sans being underwater) within a couple hours. Heads bleed a lot "quote from Andy who still had his googles on as we were walking to a first aid kit" - dad it too far gone! Lucky I did my school work before I just can't think anymore ! Priceless
